Not too early to planfor summer camp

The Schenectady chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club will again be sponsoringtwo teenagers for a week at a DEC summer camp. Those selected will have the opportunity to enjoy a blend of learning and recreation. Activities may include hiking, backpacking, water sports and environmental workshops.

There are two camps available: Camp Colby is for youth ages 11-13. Pack Forest TeenEcology Camp is for teens 14-17 .Camp sessions are for one week in July and August. Pack Forest will have five weeks of the Teen Ecology program (weeks 1-5) and Camp Colby will run for seven weeks starting July 1, 2012.

PackForest, located in the southern Adirondacks, is the DEC’s newest camp, openingfor the first time in 1998 and conducting a high school level program in environmental studies. It is located on 2,500 acres of woodlands with an 85-acre lake and countless miles of trails leading to mountain vistas and the banks ofthe Hudson River.

The Lake Colby Environmental Education Camp for youth, who are 11-13 years old, ison a lake just outside the Village of Saranac Lake.

Campers participate in a wide variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, birdwatching, fly-tying, archery, canoeing, hiking, camping, orienteering and hunter safety education. Campersalso learn about fields, forest, streams and ponds through fun, hands-on activities and outdoor exploration.

If you, or any youth you know is interested in nature and outdoor activities andwould like to go to camp for free next summer (Schenectady ADK pays the $350 fee) please apply now. This experience is available to the public with preference given to those with affiliation in ADK.

On a separate sheet of paper, please tell us why you feel you should be sponsoredby the Schenectady Chapter of ADK to stay at a DEC camp for a week this comingsummer. This may include anyoutdoor skills or educational pursuits as well as past and present interests and/or experiences, expectations, future plans, environmental concerns and/oranything else considered relevant in helping us make our decision during ourselection process. (Print or Type) Please tell us how old you will beby December 1, 2012 to determine age eligibility.
