ConservationPROTECT! The Adirondacks is seeking support for the creation of a new 40,000-acre Hudson Headwaters Wilderness Area. The Adirondack Park Agency (APA) is taking up the issue of formal classification of the first phase of the 69,000 acres of new Forest Preserve lands in the process of being purchased by New York State from The Nature Conservancy. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the historic purchase in 2012; lands will be purchased over the next five years. These are lands formerly owned by Finch Paper in Glens Falls. Last December, the state bought the first parcel of 22,000 acres surrounding the Essex Chain Lakes and lands including seven miles of the Hudson River and five miles of the Cedar River. PROTECT believes that this creates an opportunity to create a New Hudson Headwaters Wilderness Area. The organization needs support to get the APA to consider a Wilderness alternative during its classification review.
